IBK Initiatives

A family led social enterprise for people managing their own support

IBK History

IBK stands for ‘Inspired by Kim’. Son of Pippa Murray, Kim died in 1998 as a result of his many and severe impairments.

Kim was fifteen when he died. IBK came into being shortly after this as a response to Pippa’s own family experience of impairment and disablement, and the continuing exclusion of others in similar situations. This grounding in lived experience, together with IBK’s ongoing engagement with current thinking, policy and practice, give a perspective informed by heart and mind, allowing nothing to be taken for granted in the search for ways of being that include us all.

‘My Child’ is a poem written by Pippa about her experiences with her son, and published in Let Our Children be – A collection of stories in 1996. Sadly the issues she raises are still relevant today.

The following descriptions of Kim were taken from professional reports and comments on the one hand; descriptions by family and friends on the other.

  • He shows a moderate developmental delay at two years eight months, with skills falling a little further behind due to a developmental plateau.
  • Kim’s a toddler with a great laugh and a lot of energy.
  • He is showing a marked developmental regression.
  • Kim tries so hard all the time. He never gives up.
  • He has severe intractable epilepsy and will need to be placed in a special school with a special care unit.
  • Kim is an ordinary lad who needs to do ordinary things with all other children his own age.
  • He is very passive.
  • Kim is so easy to be with.
  • He has autistic tendencies.
  • Kim communicates so beautifully.
  • He is often uncooperative.
  • Kim is easy going.
  • He can’t behave like that. He simply has to stop!
  • I love it when he gets excited. His enthusiasm is so infectious.
  • He needs respite care.
  • Kim needs baby-sitters and friends.
  • He has frequent seizures. These constitute a major problem.
  • Kim has frequent seizures. They are a part of him.
  • He has complex communication difficulties.
  • Being with Kim allows me to be myself – to get away from all peer pressures, and pressures of the world.
  • He has severe learning difficulties.
  • Kim teaches me more than I can ever teach him. He is the best teacher I’ve ever had.
  • He has co-ordination difficulties. He does not have full mobility.
  • I love the way Kim moves. When he is very poorly and lifts his arm so slowly I wonder at the grace of his movement.
  • Due to his severe epilepsy he has variable function.
  • Sometimes Kim is energetic, sometimes he’s tired.
  • Due to his problems the family will experience great strain over the summer holidays.
  • No professionals for six weeks. Hooray!

Since IBK was set up as a formal organisation in 2004, we have engaged in many projects. The fight for equality is at the heart of all our work. At the present time (2022) our work is mainly centred on supporting people who have a Direct Payment and/or Personal Health Budget. We also run a personalised education programme for young people receiving a budget for education out of a formal school setting. Both these strands of work are close to Pippa’s heart: she and her family lived a lifestyle entirely suited to self directed support; and Kim was home educated as Pippa declined to send him to a residential school 300 miles from their home.

Things have changed since Kim’s lifetime. Sadly the progress made in some areas is tempered by the regression in others. We recognise the impact the present crisis in social care is having on disabled children & adults and their families. We know how cuts in social care make support more fragile and insecure. We have seen our systems of education, health and social care fail to achieve equality for disabled people. Our founder and Chair of Trustees, Dr Pippa Murray, continues to be involved in campaigns challenging the status quo, raising awareness and developing peer support.

Chair of Trustees: Dr Pippa Murray

Pippa has been championing the rights and voices of disabled children, young people and families for the past 40 years. The fight for justice and rights started many years earlier: as a child, she had an ill-defined sense that inequalities of all sorts – race, gender, age, illness & impairment, culture, poverty – were wrong. This general feeling grew and encompassed other inequalities when she was a young adult and finally crystalised when her children were very young: her daughter and son taught her that we all stand to lose when we are divided according to difference; and that we only feel comfortable in our own skins when we acknowledge that difference is part of our human condition. Acknowledging the many differences that divide in today’s world, Pippa’s focus has been on the way in which a disabling world segregates and excludes many people as a result of their illnesses and impairments.

Over the past 40 years, Pippa has set up parent’s groups at the same time as shining a light on the voices of disabled children and young people. Alongside her many research and story-telling projects, she has led innovative family centred projects championing the rights and voices of children, young people and parents. In 2004 Pippa set up IBK Initiatives to support disabled children, young people, adults and their families to make the most out of their Direct Payment or Personal Health Budget.

Pippa is a member of Citizen Network https://citizen-network.org/ and a Director for Bringing Us Together, a not for profit organisation bringing together families, disabled people of all ages, & their friends and allies. http://www.bringingustogether.org.uk

And when I’m not working…

Pippa is a proud and active grandmother. She is lucky enough to have 3 beautiful granddaughters who invite her into their lives and give her much fun and laughter. When she is not spending time with them Pippa loves to garden, potter, swim in the sea, cook, read books and watch films.

Vicky Hyde / PA Recruitment

Hi there!  My name is Vicky and I have the pleasure of working directly with families who have a Direct Payment/Personal Budget and who are looking to employ a Personal Assistant (PA).  My role is to match each individual person, family, child or young person with the perfect PA.  I love the variety this gives, but most of all the job satisfaction resulting from achieving this and hearing back about the positive impact PA’s have on families is beyond amazing! I’ve been doing this since 2015 at ibk with my wonderful colleague Kate.  Together we meet families and compile job adverts, interview PA’s, liaise with Social Workers/Nurse Assessors to follow the steps so that we can introduce PA’s that meet what the person needs and wants and can genuinely enhance the lives of the people they are working for.  I am proud to create the opportunity for wonderful relationships to be created.   We are a small, very close team at ibk and together we will go the extra mile without doubt.  We are a little ibk family!

At home, I am Mum to 2 teenage boys who are both sport crazy, especially football and cricket.  My evenings are spent organising football matches and at the weekend I will often be pitch side cheering them on.  I also love to go for a run (well jog!) as often as I can with my friend, although my husband says we spend more time on the street corner chatting afterwards than we do on our run!

Sue Straw / Director of Operations

I have been part of the Ibk team since 2016, and during this time I have had the pleasure of supporting many Inspirational, Brave and Kind families and individuals who are navigating the world of Social Care, Health or Education using direct payments, personal budgets or other funding streams.

My role is to ensure that the quality of services our team deliver every day, is exceptional. We aim to successfully support families and individuals to achieve what they want from life and to ensure that this is not limited by or defined by their “disability”.

My passion for this work is led by my determination to “make a difference” and I am proud in the knowledge that together with the rest of my amazing Ibk team, we will continue to do our very best to achieve this and much more.

When I am not working, I am enjoying precious time with my own family and friends, which includes 4 furry pets and a pond full of fish!

Kate Randerson / PA Recruitment

My name is a Kate and I have been part of the IBK family since 2014! I job share with the wonderful Vicky as a PA Recruitment and Development Worker. I work with families to support them to find and recruit the right PA’s for them, I love getting to know a family and what they are looking for. I write job adverts, interview PA’s, organize introductions, liaise with professionals, attend job fairs and lots of things in between! There is no better feeling than making a perfect matching and watching a PA relationship blossom. I am also involved in the SNIPS befriending scheme which provides young people under the age of 18 with a 1:1 befriender. Befrienders make a huge impact on young peoples lives and it is a pleasure to see the progress young people make under this scheme. Alongside this work, I am a safeguarding lead and work in compliancy across the organisation.

At home, I am Mum to 2 young boys and cat Mum to our kitten Pickle! I love reading, cooking, baking, swimming and jogging. We love being out and about as a family and I am always planning our next adventure!

Imogen Fay / Admin worker for PA Recruitment

I originally applied to be a Personal Assistant at IBK as I’d been seriously ill which had changed my plans for the future. Due to having health conditions of my own, the job really appealed to me as I felt I had so much empathy for those individuals who needed help. Although I didn’t have the correct experience for the role I applied for, I was invited to become a volunteer in the office. Since the first day IBK have made me feel so welcome, as well as being so patient and understanding it just shows how everyone here cares so much about what they’re doing. It feels great being part of the process for families to be matched with their perfect PA.

At home I live with my partner, where we love to cram as many holidays in a year. When I’m not travelling or planning my next trip, I enjoy socializing with family or friends with cake and coffee or doing yoga.
