Personal Assistant to Disabled Young People and adults

We are looking for caring, enthusiastic individuals to support disabled young people on a 1:1 basis in Sheffield. The support depends on what the individual needs and wants, but it can involve taking part in social and leisure activities, finding and trying out new things, spending time at home, communicating and learning from one another, or helping with independent living skills. You will often be working in close relationship with the person’s family. Your working hours will be flexible and they may include evenings and weekends. Hours can vary from 5 to 30 hours a week depending on what you are looking for and what the family can offer.

Although hours can vary, we commonly offer posts ranging from 5 to 35 hours a week.

Often PA’s work with more than one family to find hours that suit their circumstances.

Salary: From £12.21 p/h dependant on role

Essential

Willing to learn from the person, their family and friends
Be friendly, reliable, and honest; and maintain confidentiality
Be respectful in the family-home
Be creative and confident in your personal approach to involving the person in new opportunities
Have a genuine desire to enhance the person’s life and boost their self confidence
A good sense of humour.

Desirable

Car driver, holding clean driving license
An understanding of the nature of this type of support work
Experience and understanding of communication difficulties
Having interests, hobbies and skills you could share with the people you support.

Benefits of this role

Working as a Personal Assistant is both rewarding and life enhancing. There are many different skills needed in your work. You might be required to do some nursing care (training will be given); accompany someone to the countryside for a day out; help someone maintain their household admin; take part in physio routines; shop, plan and make meals and so on. The tasks can be extremely varied and each day different.

Being a Personal Assistant can be a job which is an end in itself, and/or it is a step to help people develop their skills and enhance their CV. Being a PA can help people wanting a career working with people. You will learn many new skills and hone existing skills. You will have opportunities to develop your communication, meet people from varied backgrounds living different life styles, and exercise creativity and autonomy.

Training

Training is usually provided by the family or individual you work with. On occasions when particular specialist training is required, this will be provided by relevant professionals through your employer.
